Petition to Stop the Proposed Quarry

Premier Ford, keep your Promise to Milton

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS everyone in Ontario deserves clean drinking water, clean air to breathe and a safe community to live in;

WHEREAS the ongoing pursuit to obtain a licence for the Reid Road Reservoir Quarry, if granted, puts at risk Campbellville and Milton’s water and will negatively impact the community’s air quality and safety;

WHEREAS pedestrians, school children, cyclists, and local commuters and those on the 401 will be endangered by the 60,000 gravel truck trips projected annually and the blasting within 100 meters of the 401;

WHEREAS the Town of Milton and the Region have all confirmed by resolution that they are opposed to the proposed Quarry;

WHEREAS in 2020 Premier Ford at a public meeting in Milton said he would make sure the proposed Reid Road Reservoir Quarry doesn’t happen, which was confirmed on March 27th , 2024 by his PC candidate for Milton, Zeeshan Hamid, at a community meeting;

WHEREAS it is a complete waste of taxpayers time and money to continue with a proponent driven Environmental Assessment of the proposed Quarry, which the community and all levels of government are opposed to;

WE THE UNDERSIGNED petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to stop wasting taxpayers money; to terminate the Environmental Assessment; to deny a licence to extract aggregate or to operate an asphalt/concrete reprocessing facility at the Reid Quarry in Campbellville; and to permanently protect the subject lands by making it conservation lands for enjoyment by all residents of Ontario.

    Local residents have been forced to spend time and considerable amounts of money out of our own pockets on this issue, which would not be necessary had the project been cancelled as promised. The proponent for the EA is also spending time and money, as is the government. This is incredibly unfair and wasteful for everyone involved.

    How does it makes sense to prolong the expensive EA process if, as we are led to believe, the project will be cancelled anyway? On its face, to local voters , it does not make sense. The Ford government should abide by its promise now.

    Not protecting people from this dangerous project is CRIMINAL! Drinking water at risk, flyrock danger, particulate in the air we breathe, truck traffic, noise, disruption of the local ecosystem. Need I say more?

    A promise should mean something! A promise kept demonstrates integrity. More than ever, we need public representation that acts in the best interests of the public good, short and long term. This Quarry puts your public at risk and should be stopped, not because a promise was made. But that alone should be enough. STOPPING the proposed Reid Road Quarry is an act FOR the public good and is proof of integrity in leadership. Mr. Ford, and your entire cabinet, please do the right thing.

    I am strongly opposed to development of wetlands in and next to provincially established environmentally sensitive areas. There is no greater waste of taxpayer dollars than to set these areas up, maintain them and then destroy them. Development is essential for economic growth but must be in harmony with other provincial initiatives. An environmental assessment was done for this Reid Road quarry site but, to my knowledge, critical topics including continuity of natural habitat were excluded from consideration, rendering the assessment incomplete.

    My husband and I have been a part of the Campbellville Road Family for 50 years. We have family and friends who live on and near Campbellville road. It is we have travelled on it countless times. It is one of the treasures of the backroads of Ontario for many reasons, one of them being the delight of tickle belly hills that the kids used to love. This is a road that was once enjoyed by folks ( like our friends) who rode horses. The rural properties on Campbellville road are some of the most beautiful well maintained in Ontario. We need to preserve the beauty, maintain safety and stop changing what is the heritage that makes Ontario unique and valuable. Keep your promise Doug Ford.
